1987 Excel X1
Just for fun I decided to get away from my
usual luxury and performance cars and restore something different.
The X1 Hyundai Excel was probably my most despised car when I was younger, so
why not have some fun with one and see what I was missing out on?
This X1 Excel is a poverty pack L with 4
speed manual, 1.5L engine, no aircon, 13" wheels, vinyl seats, and pretty much
no redeeming features.
It is however almost 28 years old and in great running condition for its age.
New it cost AUD $9990 and this model was responsible for getting Hyundai off the
ground in Australia.
It's fair to say that I have never been so
uninspired by a project car, these are very rare now and to find one in such
good original condition is almost impossible. This one cost me $200.00 so it is
not a huge outlay, and with a thousand or so dollars spent on it I should have a
good car that will be worth at least $500.00!!
Yes that's right, these are totally worthless, which is probably why there are
so few left on the road. There are so few left now that it's not even worth
wrecking as there is no market for second hand parts for this model.
I've spent 4 days now fiddling with it looking for some inspiration and I'm going to put it under a cover for a while till I get some ideas.
